JOBS AT NDSM FUSE

VACANCIES

ENTHOUSIASTIC BOARDMEMBERS (M/V/X)

Mission

NDSM FUSE is a bottom-up initiated presentation platform for contemporary art, run by artists from the NDSM Wharf and volunteers in Amsterdam-Noord. Since May 2018, it has organised exhibitions and public programmes throughout the year in which artists based at the NDSM site play a central role.

Under the name NDSM XPO, NDSM FUSE presents several group exhibitions each year featuring artists from the site. In addition, NDSM FUSE offers space to external artists and initiatives. This results in a diverse and dynamic programme that brings together different disciplines, perspectives and audiences.

Vision

NDSM FUSE aims to make art accessible to a broad and diverse audience. The organisation believes that experiencing art enhances the ability to relate to other people, stories and cultures, and creates space for reflection and new perspectives.

The programme of NDSM FUSE emerges from artistic practice and collaboration and is carefully curated based on relevance, diversity and accessibility. Different disciplines are deliberately brought together, and visitors are actively engaged through interactive installations and public programmes that invite participation and dialogue.

Space and Context

NDSM FUSE is located in a monumental, industrial shipbuilding hall on the NDSM Wharf. In contrast to the neutrality of the traditional white cube, the space at NDSM FUSE is an active and meaningful part of the presentation. Its raw context demands flexibility, creativity and tailor-made solutions in both artistic programming and organisational approach. This open and ever-changing environment lies at the core of the character and development of NDSM FUSE.

Organisation

Since its founding, NDSM FUSE has been led by Jolanda Lanslots. Together with a core team, she is responsible for the daily operations and the further development of the organisation.

In order to further professionalise NDSM FUSE—including applying for subsidies and obtaining ANBI (public benefit organisation) status—expansion and strengthening of the board is necessary. In addition, the current chair’s permitted term is coming to an end.

At present, NDSM FUSE does not receive structural public funding and operates largely with volunteers. To ensure a sustainable future, it is essential to strengthen the organisational structure and create greater financial security, among other means through subsidies, partnerships, and increased income from rentals and sales.

The Board

The board collectively holds responsibility for:

-defining and safeguarding policy and strategic direction;

-financial oversight and good governance;

-supporting and advising the director;

-safeguarding the mission, vision and societal relevance of NDSM FUSE.

The board operates within a bottom-up organisational culture. This means the board does not steer artistic content but facilitates, reflects and creates professional conditions in which artistic development, experimentation and collaboration can flourish. Board members have a hands-on mentality: they are willing to actively contribute ideas and, where necessary, provide practical support in the organisation’s development. They understand the dynamics of an organisation operating outside traditional museum structures and know how to combine flexibility with further professionalisation.

The board meets approximately six times per year. Board positions are unpaid; members may claim reimbursement for travel and other expenses.
